A group of seven accused members of German left-wing extremist organization face trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the group was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
