Comeback Medvedev Wins Maiden Championship in Nearly 30 Months

Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one championships have been achieved on hardcourt

A comeback the Russian player secured his initial championship for nearly 30 months with a win over Frenchman Moutet in the tournament final.

The athlete, a ex- world number one, has had a torrid year, achieving just a single victory at the major tournaments and suffering a meltdown at the American major.

Medvedev's unpredictability on the tennis tour - and struggles with his serving in particular - resulted in him falling of the world's top 10 and ultimately parting ways with long-time mentor his previous coach.

Currently working with his coach and his other coach, he has gradually progressed in the past month - peaking in a closely contested three-set triumph over opponent Moutet.

This represents Medvedev's initial championship since the Italian tournament and first on a hard surface after that period of the previous year.

Success also indicates Medvedev has achieved 21 victories at 21 distinct competitions.

"It's the first time I have attended a competition with my both daughters at once, so to get a title is particularly special," commented ranked player Medvedev.

"This championship is in honour of my younger daughter her name, because the first title I won when my older daughter my daughter was born was for her."

Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his past six title deciders, including in Halle in the past months.

Medvedev's counter-punching strategy and frequent reactions on the tennis court had prompted observers to doubt if his ability to perform at the highest level was concluded.

Yet the athlete has made changes in the last few weeks, attempting to come to the net and perform positively, supported by an enhanced serve.

He came back from a break down in the initial set against the difficult Frenchman, winning 4 of the concluding five games to go ahead.

The pair swapped service breaks in the second set before the Frenchman, bidding for his maiden tour victory, seized the initiative to create a final set.

He rescued 4 initial opportunities in a tight final set before the champion won the break to 15 to close out the victory.

Appropriately, he earned victory with a rally at the net area, with his opponent failing to manage a volley after a lengthy match.
