This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but inside Together exists a deep examination about how we choose to love each other.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
