Toto Wolff Preparing to Divest Stake Pricing Mercedes F1 at £4.6bn

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in final negotiations to sell a portion of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

This transaction estimates Mercedes at £4.6bn – a record for an F1 team – after McLaren was appraised at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to ownership structure last September.

Wolff, who holds one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, plans to divest a stake approximately five percent.

The 53-year-old will remain as team boss and CEO if the sale goes through.

Ownership Structure

Remaining partners in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes and chemicals giant Ineos, who both hold one-third of the company.

An official representative stated: "We will be making no official statement on this. The governance of the team will remain unchanged, and all three partners are dedicated to the ongoing success of the brand in Formula One."

Valuation Growth

The deal would represent a significant increase in value of Mercedes F1 since Ineos bought its share for £208m in 2022.

This surge demonstrates the expansion in valuations of Formula 1 outfits recently as a consequence of the increasing appeal of the sport globally.

This trend was evident with the success of the F1 movie starring Brad Pitt, which debuted last summer and earned more than $630m (£458 million) at cinemas worldwide.

It is the actor's top-grossing movie and the highest-earning sports film ever released.

Current Standings

Mercedes are second in the team standings, trailing McLaren Racing, with three races left in the current championship.

Their lead driver George Russell has secured victory in 2 of the 21 races so far and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes secured a unprecedented eight straight constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, between 2014 and 2021.
